this morning that's getting a lot of buzz, the gap between mitt romney and barack obama is 18 points on this quinnipiac poll. can mitt romney win without closing out this gap? and what does he need to do to change whatever he is whafsh he is stumping on it's not resonating with women the way you say the president's failed policies are. >> i'd say he needs to complete the sentence. i think people get at a fundamental level that this economy is not on track. we're not doing well. 43 million people without jobs, the highest number of people on food stamps. you know, they know at a gut level it's not working. so i think governor romney will now complete the sentence and say, okay, going forward in four years, you want four more years of that? or will -- or will you accept my plan that is governor romney's for energy production, and more trade, and workforce development, and a better tax policies for small business. this is the plan that will get us to a better recovery, and more access to the american dream. >> when you say complete the sentence. but so far that sentence, you look at the

reporting live for us this morning. dan lothian is in denver, following the obama campaign. what has the president done for final preparations? >> well, he will be, this morning, going through the briefing books again, doing some final preparations and as you heard earlier, doing a walk-through later this afternoon of the venue. but the bulk of the work has happened over the last couple of days as a president was in nevada, which is, of course, a key battleground state, going through the debate camp. senator john kerry playing the role of governor romney. that's good for two reasons at least for the obama campaign because he knows mitt romney very well, coming from the state of massachusetts, but also is veteran debater himself. he's been helping the president out. now, the thing that we'll be watching for is what the real push will be from the obama campaign. and the romney campaign tonight in terms of their overall theme. as you know, it is all about domestic policies, so they're talking about the economy, about health care, about the role of government, what the president will do,

made sure they did see a different president obama yesterday on the trail for sure. >> yes. could the october surprise be the september jobs report? it comes out at 8:30 eastern this morning. economists surveyed by cnn money aren't expecting to game changer but they expect more of the same sluggish growth. here's their prediction. 110,000 jobs addedast month. if that pans out it will be a slight improvement over august when 96,000 jobs are created. in both cases those numbers are not nearly high enough to bring down the jobless rate. >> what does the september jobs report mean for you? chriine romans is minding your business. she will join us later in this half hour. meanwhile, new developments this morning, more flights canceled, more planes idle. it is shaping up to be a rough, rough morning for american airlines and thousands of air travelers. 38 boeing 747s have been called in for maintenance and passengers on dozens more american flights will have to find another way to get where they're going today. if you're watching this from the airport, keep watching. you'll be watching
